Professional theater was born in the Renaissance in Italy when a group of Italian actors invented Commedia dell'Arte. With documentation of their performances, historians see that, for the first time in history, actors were paid for their services.

In Renaissance Italian the word "Commedia" means "theater" and the word "Arte" means "profession". The title the actors gave to their work was: "Commedia dell'Arte": "Acting as a profession".
